Building on the amazing work of “First Timers” festival, Decolonise Fest is hosting a Intro to Guitar workshop focused on getting more Punx of Colour playing!
DIY guitar for beginners!! Run by Rachel Aggs
This will be a workshop for re-thinking the guitar as a macho power-tool /phalic symbol and improving your confidence with writing riffs / songs and performing live! We will offer examples of our favourite self taught guitarists and some inspiring LGBTQ, women and POC guitar heroes!!
The focus will be on having great ideas and making cool sounds not on technique or right/wrong ways of playing – cus guess what? There is no wrong way! Even if you have never touched a guitar before, please come down and try it out! Let’s make a mess!
We will cover the basics:
how to make sound come out the guitar – how to plug it in, what gear you do or DONT need!
- Tuning – how to tune by ear + how to use a tuning pedal + experimenting with tuning
- Holding the pick – playing simple rhythms, sometimes one string is all u need!
- Riffs – how to come up with wild riffs using simple scales
- Chords – who needs them? I will teach u the 3 chords I know – now form a band!!
You can probably still learn something even if you can’t bring a guitar with you, but obviously would be very handy if you can bring your own guitar!!

First Timers is a season of workshops followed by a weekend of gigs where every band plays its first show. We want to provide a supportive context for people new to playing music before, during and after First Timers season!
About the venue
DIY Space for London is an accessible venue. It is on a single floor level, with access ramps, widened doors, an accessible toilet and plenty of space for maneuvering and getting away from crowds. There is plenty of seating available and the toilets are gender neutral and accessible.
