Workshop details
We will be defacing and detourning flags using the avant-garde and modernist techniques from three decolonial post war art movements. Al Hurufiya was a decolonial movement that started in the 1950s from Iraq, but also was found in Pakistan, Iran, Sudan and Egypt. Letterism started in Paris by a teenage Jewish refugee in the 1940s and soon brought other internationals into its movement before transforming into Situationism. The Asemic writing movement is a contemporary international style with practitioners across Europe Asia and the Americas. Following historical examples, such as the creation of the first flag of Haiti made by defacing the French flag after the defeat of Napoleon and the abolition of slavery in 1804, or Faith Ringgold’s Flag Show in the USA in the 1960s, we will use these different but related styles to make defacements of colonial flags, including of course the flag of England!
