Liverpool trio steel. (vocalist and bassist Jo Makabayi, guitarist Toby Crookes, and drummer Gabi Todd) formed in 2023 at Edgehill University in Ormskirk. The band have made a name for themselves in the Liverpool DIY scene due to their driving, industrial art punk sound, experimental song structures and diary entry-esque spoken word monologues. They released their debut single ‘DFTTM’ in April, which channels the tightly wound frenzy of early noughties indie bands like Bloc Party and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Since their formation, steel. have been lauded as ones to watch by Future Now Festival in Birkenhead thanks to their riotous set at the event in 2024. They have also garnered several high-profile support slots opening for Lou Barlow’s (Dinosaur Jr.) Folk Implosion, Black feminist group Big Joanie, and the US rock band Skating Polly.
